Early LifeGloria Jean Watkins was born on September 25, 1952 in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. One of six, Gloria grew up in a working class family. Her love for literacy started at an early age. Her upbringing in her hometown of Hopkinsville, as well as her experiences through the desegregation of schools became the topics and inspiration of much of her writing in the years to come.

Gloria attended Stanford University where she earned her bachelors degree in English. After graduating undergrad in 1973, she went on to earn her masters in English from the University of Wisconsin, in 1976. After earning her masters, Gloria pursued a career in teaching. Following her passion for literature, six years later, she completed her doctorate in the literature department from the University of California, Santa Cruz.
